Pain Relief - Natural Health Therapy Centre

How it works for pain:

Acupuncture relieves pain by stimulating sensory nerves in the skin and muscles. This triggers the central nervous system to release the body's natural painkillers—such as endorphins and serotonin—while simultaneously improving blood flow and reducing local tissue inflammation.

The process works through three main mechanisms:

Nerve Stimulation: The insertion of very fine needles at specific acupoints activates sensory receptors, which send signals to the brain and spinal cord to help block pain messages.

Biochemical Release: This nerve stimulation prompts the brain to release natural chemicals such as endorphins (the body's natural painkillers) and serotonin, which helps regulate mood and pain perception.

Reduced Inflammation & Improved Circulation: At the local level, needle insertion increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to injured tissues, helping reduce muscle spasms, swelling, and overall inflammation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these same physical effects are described as restoring the smooth flow of energy, known as Qi, through pathways called meridians.
